Steps to cancel Microsoft 365

  1. 1Go to account.microsoft.com/services and sign in with the Microsoft account that bought the subscription
  2. 2Find Microsoft 365 under Services & subscriptions and select Manage
  3. 3Select Cancel subscription (it may be labeled Upgrade or Cancel)
  4. 4On the cancellation page choose I don't want my subscription, not I want to keep my benefits
  5. 5Follow the prompts to confirm — refund eligibility is calculated and shown inside this flow
  6. 6If the page shows Turn on recurring billing instead of a cancel option, the subscription is already set to expire and there is nothing to cancel
  7. 7If you bought it in the Apple App Store or Google Play, cancel there; if from a retailer such as Amazon, cancel with that retailer

The Microsoft 365 catch

Only the Microsoft account that owns the subscription can cancel it — if you are on someone else's Microsoft 365 Family plan you can only leave the plan, and the charge stays with the owner. Cancelling also cuts OneDrive from 1 TB to 5 GB and reduces storage for everyone you shared with, so move files off before the term ends.

Will Microsoft 365 still charge you after you cancel?

You can keep using Microsoft 365 until the subscription expires. After that your cloud storage reverts to 5 GB (OneDrive plus Outlook.com attachments) and 15 GB of Outlook.com storage — if you are over those limits you cannot upload files or send and receive mail, and content can be deleted after six months.

Refunds: You are entitled to a refund of your most recent recurring charge if you cancel within 30 days after that payment, limited to one time per Microsoft account per subscription product; guaranteed prorated refunds beyond that apply only in Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Israel, Korea, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal and Turkey, not the US.

How the charge looks on your statement

Microsoft 365 usually posts as MSFT *<reference code> MSBILL.INFO, or MICROSOFT*MICROSOFT 365 — Microsoft documents the MICROSOFT*<product> pattern (its own example is MICROSOFT*CANDY CRUSH) — which is why it can be hard to recognise when you're scanning a statement for things to cut.
