How to cancel Max (HBO Max)— and check you're not still being charged
Max renames and reprices often, and a lot of people keep paying long after the show they came for ended.
Steps to cancel Max (HBO Max)
- 1Go to HBOMax.com/subscription and sign in, or in the app choose your profile then Subscription (on a TV, the Settings icon then Subscription)
- 2Read who your base plan is billed through at the top of the screen
- 3If it says WarnerMedia, choose Cancel Your Subscription
- 4Confirm the cancellation and note the expiration date it shows you
- 5If there is no cancel option, cancel with the company named at the top instead — for example turn off auto-renewal at Amazon.com/appstoresubscriptions, use Cancel Subscription in Apple or Google Play, or choose Cancel Channel in Amazon Prime Video Channels

HBO Max has a flat no-refund policy for anything it bills directly, and it warns that some billing providers require cancelling at least 24 hours before the renewal date — so cancelling on renewal day can still cost you another full period. Pay-per-view charges and the Extra Member Add-On are billed separately from the base plan, which is why one cancellation may not clear every HBO Max line on your statement.
Will Max (HBO Max) still charge you after you cancel?
You can stream until the subscription expires at the end of the billing period, and the expiration date is shown when you confirm. An Extra Member Add-On is cancelled when the base plan expires, and you get a prorated refund for the remaining days on that add-on.
Refunds: There is a no-refund policy for subscriptions billed through HBO Max (WarnerMedia Direct); app-store and partner billing follow that provider's own refund policy, and only unused Extra Member Add-On days are refunded prorated.
Max (HBO Max) runs $9.99–$20.99/mo — 5% more than the average streaming subscription we track (~$15/mo across the streaming services we track). Before you cancel, check whether you're also still paying for Netflix, Hulu, Disney+ — a common overlap in the same category.
The only way to be sure a cancellation stuck is to look at your statement. Finletix reads a CSV, PDF, or screenshot and flags every recurring charge — including Max (HBO Max), duplicates, and silent price hikes — without ever touching your bank login.
