[ad_1] London CNN  —  Workers are struggling to cope with a “seemingly infinite workday,” involving an increasing load of meetings scheduled at 8 p.m. or later and a near-constant stream of interruptions, according to new research by Microsoft. The company analyzed data from users of Microsoft 365 services — which include Outlook and PowerPoint — globally between mid-January and mid-February. It found that the number of meetings booked between 8 p.m. and just before midnight had risen 16% compared with last year. Geographically dispersed teams, as well as those with flexible working arrangements, were responsible for much of that increase.…

[ad_1] Washington CNN  —  Americans are feeling a hangover from their tariff-fueled buying frenzy early in the spring. Retail sales fell by 0.9% in May from the prior month, the Commerce Department said Tuesday, down sharply from April’s downwardly revised 0.1% decline. That was the steepest monthly decline since January and worse than the 0.7% decrease economists projected in a poll by data firm FactSet. The figures are adjusted for seasonal swings but not inflation. The drop was mostly due to plummeting car sales. Excluding those purchases, retail sales were down a more modest 0.3%. Early in the spring, Americans…

[ad_1] New York CNN  —  Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta offered employees of rival OpenAI signing bonuses of $100 million to switch companies, according to Open AI CEO Sam Altman. “They started making giant offers to a lot of people on our team,” Altman said Tuesday on the “Uncapped” podcast hosted by his brother Jack. “You know, like $100 million signing bonuses.” Altman said that Meta’s attempts to poach his staff have failed, at least so far. “None of our best people have decided to take them up on that,” Altman said. Meta didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. The…

[ad_1] Pope Leo XIV is making the threat of AI to humanity a key issue of his legacy, challenging the technology industry that has spent years courting the Vatican.  The new American pope’s namesake, Leo XIII, stood up for the rights of factory workers during the Gilded Age, a period in the 19th century of swift economic change and extreme wealth inequality led by corrupt industrial robber barons. Speaking to a hall of cardinals last month, the pope said he would rely on 2,000 years of church social teaching to “respond to another industrial revolution and to innovations in the…

[ad_1] Tales of intergenerational turmoil tend to strike a nerve, so I steeled myself for some angry emails last month when I wrote a story about the millennials who aren’t ready to inherit homes from their baby boomer parents. Both boomers and millennials have good reason to get touchy about media scrutiny — each side has caught plenty of grief for the economic shortcomings of the younger generation. But in all my mental preparation, I failed to consider that my story would piss off an entire other cohort: Gen Xers. What I wrote still rings true: Millennials stand to inherit trillions…

[ad_1] New York CNN  —  Smartwater is bringing one of the world’s most familiar faces — and former friend — back to its advertisements. Jennifer Aniston is once again the face of the electrolyte-infused water, rejoining the brand following a five-year hiatus. The Coca-Cola-owned unit has re-signed the actress and entrepreneur to attract attention to the nearly 30-year-old Smartwater, which faces growing competition from newer brands. Aniston first signed with Smartwater in 2007, shortly after Coca-Cola acquired the company, helping it become the top-selling premium water brand in the United States. Her memorable ads became a mainstay on television and…
